La Nucía's hillside villas have room for generous showers, and plenty of owners who are away for months at a time. We design wet rooms and walk-in showers that look good and need very little looking after.
Many homes in La Nucía are villas on the slopes above the coast, in urbanisations where each plot has its own terrace and garden. Bathrooms tend to be larger than in town flats, and several bedrooms may each have an en-suite.
That space is an opportunity. A tired corner cubicle can give way to a roomy wet room with a drain along one wall, a fixed glass panel and a bench seat. The cost of that openness is that the floor, falls and sealing have to be right across a bigger area.
We have been building and renovating around this coast since 1999, and villas are a big part of that work. Plumbing, tiling and carpentry come from our own crew, with a single manager keeping the order of work tidy from first measurement to handover.
Villa space
A villa en-suite can take a shower sized for two, with a bench, a long niche and a screen that is a single clear pane. Wide spaces let water run to a linear drain at the back, so the whole floor slopes one way and looks simple.
The floor structure is usually a concrete slab, which suits recessed drains and gentle falls. We still check it, because additions and old renovations do not always follow the plans. A small test at the survey saves a surprise later.
We also talk about how the room is used. Is it a main suite, a guest bathroom or a pool-side facility used by wet swimmers? The answer shapes the floor finish, the drain size and how much grip the tiles need.
Hard water
Water in this area leaves its mark. White deposits cling to glass, chrome and tile, and a shower that is not wiped down will show them quickly. The aim is to make the cleaning easy rather than pretend it is unnecessary.
Large tiles and porcelain panels reduce grout lines. A well-sealed surface sheds water, and a squeegee kept in the shower makes the routine take seconds. We keep the number of glass fixings low, since each bracket is another corner for deposits.
If the villa has a softener or a filter, we plan around it. If it does not, we can talk about whether one is worth considering. It is not part of every shower job, but for heavy users it can extend the life of fittings.
Second homes
A villa that is closed up for months can develop problems nobody sees. Water left in a trap dries out, seals can shrink, and a small leak under a floor has plenty of time to cause harm before someone returns to find it.
We build with that in mind. The base is sealed fully, the drain is accessible for inspection, and the isolation valves are placed where a caretaker can find them. We give you a simple note of where everything is.
On request we can also check the shower after you leave and before you arrive. Owners living abroad are an everyday part of our work, and we keep you informed with photographs and clear messages throughout the job.
How it works
Our first call is to the villa itself, where we take measurements, check the slab and follow the drain. Then we talk about how you actually use the room, and a free quotation sets out the base, the sealing, the glass and the finishes.
Jobs go in a set order: strip-out, pipework, base, sealing, tiling, screen, fittings. You see photographs of every stage, and when it is finished we walk you round the new shower, or show it on a video call if you cannot be here.
Questions
In many cases yes. A concrete slab and room to slope the floor gently towards the drain suit it well. We survey the floor and drain first, then explain which layout suits the room: an open drained floor or a defined shower zone.
Use a squeegee after showering, keep grout and surfaces sealed, and choose large tiles with few joints. Hard water cannot be avoided, but the right finishes make cleaning quick. We advise at the survey on what to specify.
With sensible preparation, yes. We seal the base properly, keep the drain accessible and show you where to isolate the supply. Running water through it on return is a good habit, and we can explain what else to check.
We fit walk-in showers in guest bathrooms and in rooms beside terraces. Pools themselves are outside what we build, but the terrace around one and the bathroom swimmers use are work we do, with non-slip floors and drainage planned.
