Walk-In Showers & Wet Rooms Costa Blanca

Dragon Reforms replaces tired baths and cramped cubicles with walk-in showers and wet rooms across the north Costa Blanca. We get the drain, the fall and the waterproofing right first, then finish the room so it is easy to clean and safe underfoot.

A walk-in shower looks simple: a tiled floor, a drain and a sheet of glass. In practice it is the part of a bathroom where mistakes are most expensive, because water has nowhere to go if the floor is not shaped correctly and the layers beneath the tiles are not sealed. That is why we treat the shower area as a job in its own right.

Many owners on this coast want the same thing from different starting points. Some have an old bath in a flat that nobody uses and a shower tray with a step they would rather not climb. Others own a holiday home where the bathroom needs to cope with sandy feet and busy weeks. Others are planning ahead for easier living as the years pass.

This service is about the shower area itself: removing the bath or tray, forming the base, fitting the drain, waterproofing, tiling or panelling, the screen and the fittings. If you want the whole room redone, with new vanity, sanitaryware and layout, that sits under our Bathroom Renovations service, and we can quote the two together.

Dragon Reforms has worked across the north Costa Blanca since 1999. Our own plumbers, tilers, carpenters and builders do the work, one team manages it, and we speak English and Spanish. The quotation is free, and you see the scope in writing before anything is started.

What is included

What a Walk-In Shower Job Covers

Whatever the size of the room, these are the stages we plan and take responsibility for.

📏Survey and floor assessmentWe measure the room, check where the existing waste pipe runs and look at what the floor is made of before we promise a design.
🚿Drain and floor fallThe drain position and the slope of the base decide whether the shower works. We set both out carefully before any tile goes down.
🛡️WaterproofingFloors and wet walls are sealed beneath the finish, with corners and drain joints treated, because this layer protects the building.
🪟Screens and finishesToughened glass, tiles or porcelain panels, niches and non-slip floors are chosen with you and agreed before they are ordered.
🔧Plumbing and electricsOur plumbers fit the valves, shower fittings and heated rails, and our electricians deal with any lighting or extraction in the room.
📸Updates and handoverPhotographs and phone updates keep owners abroad informed, and we check the room with you at the end. Work is guaranteed within the quotation's scope.

Bath to shower

Replacing a Bath With a Walk-In Shower

It is the most requested change, and usually the most worthwhile.

Taking out a bath frees a surprising amount of floor, and the room often feels twice the size afterwards. The usual route is to remove the bath and its surround, make good the walls, and build a new shower base in the same footprint, with the drain moved only as far as it needs to go.

The practical question is the waste pipe. A bath drains at a different height and position from a shower, so we check where the existing pipe leaves the room and whether the floor can accommodate a proper fall. Sometimes a small adjustment solves it. Sometimes the base has to sit a little higher than the owner imagined.

We say so at the survey rather than discovering it halfway through. If a raised base is the honest answer, we explain what it looks like, how high the step is, and whether another layout would give you a truer level entrance.

Waterproofing

Waterproofing: The Detail That Matters Most

Everything you see in a shower is finish. The layer beneath is what protects the building.

A shower floor that leaks does not announce itself. Water works through grout, reaches the screed or slab and then appears as a stain on a ceiling below or a damp patch on a neighbouring wall. In a block of flats that means a problem for somebody else too, so the sealing system is not an area for shortcuts.

We seal the base, the lower wall and the junctions where floor meets wall, and we pay particular attention to the drain, where most failures begin. The membrane is covered by the tiling or panels, which is why it must be right before anything else is laid.

Where a room has had damp before, we look at the cause first. Fitting a new shower over an unresolved leak only hides it. Our damp proofing team can assess walls that already show signs of moisture before the shower work begins.

Wet rooms

Wet Rooms: When the Whole Room Is the Shower

A true wet room treats the entire floor as a drained, sealed surface.

In a wet room the floor falls gently towards a drain, the walls are sealed to a suitable height and there may be no tray or enclosure at all. It suits larger bathrooms, villas with generous en-suites and anyone who wants a completely step-free room.

It is also a bigger commitment than a walk-in shower. The whole floor has to be formed and sealed, door thresholds need thought so water stays in, and the floor structure must be able to take the new falls. A concrete slab is straightforward. An older timber or suspended floor needs more careful assessment.

We will tell you plainly when a full wet room is right, and when a walk-in shower with a fixed glass panel gives you most of the benefit with less disruption. Both can look excellent. The right one depends on the room.

Glass and finishes

Screens, Tiles, Panels and Floors

The visible choices affect how the shower feels and how much cleaning it needs.

Toughened glass screens are the usual choice for a walk-in shower. A single fixed panel keeps the room open and keeps spray in, while a hinged or sliding door suits smaller or draughtier spaces. Fewer frames and fixings mean fewer places for limescale to collect.

Hard water is a fact of life on much of this coast, and it marks glass and chrome quickly. Larger tiles or porcelain wall panels reduce grout lines, and a good sealer plus a squeegee habit makes a real difference. We can also add a niche so bottles stay off the floor.

Floors must grip when wet without being so rough that they are hard to clean. We help you choose tiles with a suitable surface and lay them to the falls the base requires, with heated towel rails and extraction planned at the same time.

Accessible showers

Showers Designed for Easier Living

A level shower is also a safer shower, and it can be planned to last.

For people with limited mobility, or for owners thinking ahead, a step-free shower is one of the most useful changes in a home. Add a fold-down seat, a grab rail in the right place and a wall-hung toilet that leaves room for movement, and the bathroom becomes far easier to use.

Fixings matter here. Rails and seats need solid backing in the wall, so we plan these before the walls are sealed and tiled rather than trying to add them afterwards. We also think about door widths, turning space and where the controls sit.

Where wider adaptations are needed through the home, our Disability Living service looks at the whole property. We can quote a shower conversion alone or as part of a larger plan, whichever suits you.

Before you hire

Questions to Ask Any Shower Installer

A good contractor is happy to answer these, and a poor one will struggle.

  • Ask how the floor will be sloped to the drain and where the drain will sit, and ask to see it drawn or marked out.
  • Ask what waterproofing system will be used, where it will go, and how corners and the drain connection are treated.
  • Ask whether the existing floor can take the new falls, or whether the base will need to be raised.
  • Ask who is responsible for plumbing, tiling and glazing, and whether one person manages them all.
  • Ask what type of glass is used and how the screen is fixed and sealed to the wall and floor.
  • Ask what you need to tell your community of owners or neighbours, and whether noise or water isolation will be a concern.
  • Ask for the scope of the work and any guarantee to be written down in the quotation before work starts.
  • Ask how you will be kept informed if you are not on site, and what happens if the survey finds something unexpected.

We are glad to be asked all of this. A free survey costs you nothing, and the written quotation sets out what is included so you can compare it fairly with any other.

Questions

Walk-In Showers & Wet Rooms Costa Blanca — Common Questions

Can you turn my bath into a walk-in shower?

Usually yes. We remove the bath, make good the walls and build a new base with a drain and proper fall. The survey tells us whether the existing waste pipe allows a fully level entrance or whether a slightly raised base is the honest answer.

What is the difference between a walk-in shower and a wet room?

A walk-in shower has a defined area, often with a glass panel. A wet room treats the whole floor as a sealed, drained surface and may have no enclosure. Wet rooms need more preparation, and we advise which suits your room.

Will a walk-in shower leak into the flat below?

Not if the waterproofing is done properly, which is why we treat it as the critical detail. We seal the base, wall junctions and drain connection before tiling, and we explain exactly what is being done and where.

Do I need permission from my community or the town hall?

It depends on the building and the work. Moving walls or changing pipework in a block may need your community's agreement. We tell you at the survey whether the work is likely to need a licence from the town hall.

How do I keep a glass shower screen clean in hard water?

Wipe or squeegee the glass after use, keep grout sealed and avoid leaving water standing. Fewer frames and larger tiles help, because limescale has fewer places to settle. We can suggest finishes that are easier to look after.

Can you build a shower I will still be able to use as I get older?

Yes. A step-free base, a fold-down seat, grab rails fixed to solid backing and a wall-hung toilet can all be planned in. We can quote this alone or alongside wider adaptations through our Disability Living service.

I live abroad. Can you manage the job without me?

Yes. We survey, quote and agree the design with you by phone, email and video call, then send photographs and updates as the work moves forward. We speak English and Spanish and look after the property throughout.
