Hillside villas with views and big terraces are the story in Finestrat, so exposure, slope and outdoor woodwork shape most of the carpentry we are asked to do.
Finestrat climbs the slopes beneath Puig Campana, and many of its villas are built on terraced plots with views towards the coast and Cala de Finestrat. The houses tend to have split levels, external stairs, retaining walls and large outdoor areas that are used as extra living rooms.
A carpenter working here spends more time outdoors than in a flat-town setting. Slopes mean steps and landings. Views mean owners want open structures that frame them rather than block them. And exposure to sun and wind means timber has to be specified and fixed with care.
We have worked on the north Costa Blanca since 1999 and understand how a hillside plot differs from a level one. We look at the site before suggesting anything, and we explain clearly what will work well and what is likely to give trouble.
Outdoor structures
On a level garden a pergola is simple to set out. On a slope, the posts may sit at different heights, the ground may be rock or fill, and the structure has to be anchored to something solid. We look at the footings first and work upwards from there.
Views are one of the main reasons people choose to live in Finestrat, so a pergola should help rather than hinder them. Open slats, a lighter frame and careful positioning of posts can provide shade while keeping the outlook clear. Sun angle matters as well: a roof that shades the table at lunch might need adjusting to also shade the sofa in the afternoon.
Wind can be strong on exposed slopes, and we take that into account in how connections are made. We would rather over-specify the fixings than see a structure move in a winter storm.
Steps and stairs
Many Finestrat villas have outdoor steps between terrace levels and sometimes timber walkways or decking linking them. These are used daily and are exposed to weather, so they need a non-slip surface, a secure handrail and materials that tolerate sun and the occasional heavy shower.
Inside, split-level houses often have short flights of stairs with awkward turns. We repair, rebuild and refinish them, and fit handrails and balustrades where they are missing or wobbly. If a stair makes you cautious every time you use it, it is worth having looked at.
Decking suits the area when laid with good drainage and ventilation underneath, so water does not sit against the timber. We explain the difference between a quick install and one built to last.
Bespoke work
Villas here are often individual, built to a particular plan or extended over the years. That tends to produce odd spaces: a landing with a window, a roof-space bedroom, a stairwell with unused volume. Bespoke joinery makes good use of them with built-in seating, shelving or wardrobes that suit the shape.
We also replace and repair doors, shutters and frames. Where houses face south and take full sun on exterior woodwork, finishes can fail quickly, so refinishing or replacing may be due sooner than owners expect.

A site visit is essential for hillside work. We walk the plot, check access for materials, look at the ground and the existing structure, and discuss what you want. The written quotation then sets out the design, materials, fixings and finish.
Access up steep drives and steps can slow deliveries, so we plan this into the schedule. Once complete, we go through the work with you. It is guaranteed, with the scope set out in the quotation.

A good exterior finish helps, but all timber in strong sun will need periodic maintenance. We explain the options and how often to expect re-coating when we quote.
