With the Peñón de Ifach as a backdrop, Calpe’s homes are a mix of sea-facing apartments and villas on the hills, and salt air is the main thing a carpenter here has to plan for.
Few places on the Costa Blanca put you as close to the water as Calpe. Many of its apartments are a short walk from the sea, and some of its villas look down on it from the slopes behind. For timber, that proximity is the main fact of life: salt in the air, strong light and a more humid atmosphere than you would find a few kilometres inland.
Interior carpentry is affected too. In apartments near the seafront, doors and wardrobes sit in rooms that are shut up for months and then flung open in summer. Wood expands and contracts in that cycle, and cheap board can swell or blister. The choice of materials and the way they are fixed make a lasting difference.

Salt air
The first question when we look at an exterior job in Calpe is how close the sea is and which way the wall faces. A balcony door facing the water takes more punishment than a side door in a courtyard. The same species of wood can last well in one position and fail in another, so we match the specification to the spot.
Fixings matter just as much as the wood. Ordinary steel screws and hinges rust quickly in salty air, and the stains and weakened joints that follow can make a good piece of carpentry look shabby. We discuss suitable hardware before ordering.
Finishes need to be renewed periodically. We would rather say so at the quotation stage and show you how to look after the work than pretend that any outdoor timber is maintenance-free.
Apartments
Inside a seafront apartment, the main challenge is humidity when the property is closed. Wardrobes in particular can trap damp air if they are built tight against an exterior wall. We build in ventilation and recommend materials that cope better with those conditions.
Replacing worn doors is often a first step in tidying a holiday flat. A fresh set of interior doors, correctly hung with new handles, changes the feel of the whole place without major disruption.
Fitted wardrobes and storage make a small apartment work better for both owners and rental guests. We lay out the interior to suit the way the flat is used, and give a straightforward view on what is worth building in and what is best left freestanding.
Villas
Villa plots on Calpe’s hillsides often come with a terrace pointing at the sea and the rock of Ifach. A pergola makes that terrace usable through the hotter months, and a well-designed one gives shade without cutting the view.
We build pergolas, decking, screens and gates, and adapt them to each house. Where a structure fixes to the building, we check how it meets the wall and how water will run off, because poorly detailed junctions are where damp and rot begin.
Existing timber that has been left unprotected can often be rescued if it is caught early. Greying and surface cracking can be treated, while soft or rotten sections need to be replaced. We tell you which situation you have.
How it works
We visit the property, measure up and look at exposure to sun, wind and sea air. We then discuss materials and finishes, and send a written quotation covering the scope, materials and fixings. If you are overseas, photos and a key holder allow us to get started without your presence.
During the job we keep floors and furnishings protected, and for apartments we respect the community’s rules on working hours and common areas. When we finish, we go through the work with you, and the guarantee is as set out in the quotation.
Questions
Salt accelerates wear on finishes and rusts ordinary metal fixings. The nearer the sea you are, the more important it is to choose suitable materials, hardware and finishes, and to renew the finish regularly.
Yes. We design them around how the flat is used, with ventilation included so that air can move when the apartment is closed up.
Often yes. Slatted or lighter designs and careful post positions can give shade without blocking the outlook. We look at the sight lines on site.
