Polop is a small inland village, and much of the carpentry we do there is restoration: beams, doors, shutters and stairs in older houses that deserve careful handling.
Polop feels very different from the coast. It is a small village set back in the hills, with narrow streets, older houses and a quieter pace of life. Alongside the village centre are hillside villas, but the older properties give the area its character, and they bring a particular kind of carpentry work.
Old village houses often have original timber: ceiling beams, wooden doors, window shutters, sometimes a timber staircase. Some are in good order. Others have been affected by damp, insects or years of neglect. Our job is to decide what can be kept, what needs repair and what is better replaced.

Original timber
Beams carry age and character, and many owners buying a village house in Polop want to expose or keep them. Before making any plans, we check the condition. We look for movement, cracking, soft patches that suggest damp, and the small holes and powder that indicate insect activity.
If a beam is sound, cleaning, treating and finishing it may be all that is needed. If it has deteriorated, repair or partial replacement may be possible. Where the question is structural, we say that a specialist opinion should be taken rather than guess.
Hiding a problem behind a new ceiling is never a good idea, so we deal with causes first. That might mean fixing a leak above, improving ventilation or treating the timber, and only then finishing it.
Doors and shutters
Solid wooden doors and shutters in older houses are often better made than many modern replacements. They may stick, sag or have lost their finish, but they can usually be saved. We ease and re-hang them, repair damaged sections and renew finishes and ironmongery.
Where a door or shutter is beyond repair, we make a replacement to suit the opening and the style of the house, rather than a stock item that does not fit. That might be a plain, practical door or a more decorative one, according to what the house calls for.
Thick walls and uneven openings mean hand-fitting. It takes longer than hanging a door in a modern frame, but the result is a door that closes properly and looks right.
Stairs and storage
Village houses can have steep, narrow timber stairs, and worn treads or loose handrails are common. We repair and reinforce them, add a proper handrail where there is none, and can rebuild a flight if it is no longer safe.
Thick stone or rendered walls mean deep alcoves and windows, which are good places for built-in shelving, benches and cupboards. Joinery made to follow these irregular shapes gives storage in houses that otherwise have little.
For hillside villas around Polop, we also build pergolas and outdoor timber, adapting designs to sloping ground and exposure to sun and wind.

In an older house, we spend time looking before we quote: at the timber, the walls, the damp and the access. We then give a written quotation that distinguishes between work that is clearly needed and work that is optional, so you can decide what to do now and what to leave.
Narrow streets can limit deliveries, so we plan how materials will arrive. We protect floors and furnishings, work carefully around original features and go through the finished job with you. The work is guaranteed, with the scope set out in the quotation.

Often they can. We assess each beam for movement, damp and insect activity, then recommend cleaning, treatment, repair or replacement. Structural doubts are referred for a specialist opinion.
In many cases yes. Solid old doors can be eased, repaired and refinished at a reasonable cost, and they often fit their frames better than a new stock door would.
