A working town as well as a resort, this stretch of the Marina Baixa has many homes lived in all year by families. Wardrobes here need to cope with daily use by children and adults, not just a few weeks of holiday.
Behind the brightly painted seafront houses lies a town of narrow streets and old buildings, with newer apartments along the coast and villas on the urbanisations inland. Because people live here permanently, storage has to work every morning: school clothes, work clothes, coats and shoes all need a place.
That puts the emphasis on practical interiors. Low rails for children, deep drawers for folded clothes, shoe racks near the door and a place for the ironing board make more difference to a family than elegant doors. We start by asking how the household actually moves through the day.

Families
Families outgrow storage quickly. A wardrobe for a child needs to change as the child grows, so we favour adjustable rails and shelves rather than fixed positions. A low rail at first can be raised later without rebuilding the unit.
Parents often want an easy reach for work clothes, uniforms and shoes. We plan the doors that are opened most often at hand height and put seasonal clothes, luggage and spare bedding in the top box above, so the day-to-day section stays uncluttered.
Where two children share a room, a pair of matching units or one unit with a divided interior avoids arguments. We can suggest sensible layouts, and show you how a shared wardrobe can be separated into two sections with different door colours.
Old streets
Townhouses in the older streets rise over several floors with steep, narrow stairs. Bedrooms may be small, with beams and walls that do not meet at right angles. A bespoke unit makes much better use of such spaces than furniture bought from a shop.
We pay attention to the stairs first. Boards that cannot get up them cannot be used, so we build in manageable sections. We also look at landings and stair-heads, where a shallow cupboard can store linen or coats close to where they are needed.
Older walls may be thick and slightly damp near the ground floor. We examine the surface before building against it, and where a wall is a problem we tell you and suggest solutions with our damp proofing and plastering teams.
Seafront
Along the waterfront, apartments with sea views are in demand, but the sea also means salt and moisture in the air. Wardrobes in these flats benefit from ventilation, breathable backs and fixings that do not corrode, as they would in a drier inland home.
Sliding doors are popular in modern apartments, where bedrooms are rarely generous. A pale finish can brighten a room facing away from the sun, while mirrored panels make a small space look larger and let the light bounce around the room.
