Expert Paving Contractors Finestrat

Published 8 July 2026 · Dragon Reforms

Paving in Finestrat has to cope with strong sun, sloping ground and sudden heavy rain. Getting the base, the fall and the material right matters more than the look alone.

Finestrat's villas climb the hillsides below Puig Campana, with more homes down towards Cala de Finestrat. Driveways, terraces and paths are often long, steep or both, and they take the weather directly.

Here is what to think about when planning paving work, and how the common materials compare. Dragon Reforms has worked across the north Costa Blanca since 1999, and the quotation is free.

Where paving goes

Driveways, Patios, Terraces and Paths

Each area asks something different of paving. A driveway carries vehicles and needs a firm base; a patio is for sitting and dining; a terrace may sit over a room below; a path simply has to be safe underfoot. Pool surrounds add the need for grip and heat comfort, which is why we treat them separately when planning.

On a sloping plot, steps, landings and edges need as much thought as the flat areas. A well-laid slope can look good and drain properly. A retaining wall behind a terrace should be checked before paving goes over the top.

We look at how the space is used before suggesting a material and layout. Having a clear plan first saves rework later.

Heat and grip

Heat and Slip Resistance

Dark surfaces in full sun get hot enough to be uncomfortable barefoot. Lighter tones stay cooler, which matters around a pool or on a south-facing terrace. Even a light colour can warm up in direct afternoon sun, so shade and finish both count.

Slip resistance is equally important. A smooth, polished surface can be treacherous when wet, so choose a textured or non-slip finish for pool surrounds, steps and ramps.

We explain the options so the surface you choose is comfortable in summer and safe after rain. It is usually possible to get a good look without compromising on grip.

Drainage

Drainage and the Base Beneath

Paving is only as good as what lies under it. A properly prepared and compacted base stops sinking and cracking, and a gentle fall carries water away from the house. Edges and kerbs matter too, because they hold the paving in place and stop it creeping.

On hillsides, rain runs fast. Channels, gulleys and falls need planning so water does not collect against walls or run onto a neighbour's land. Where a terrace sits above a room, waterproofing is considered before the final surface goes down.

Poor drainage is the most common reason paving fails early, which is why we look at it before choosing the surface.

Materials

Porcelain, Natural Stone, Sandstone and Travertine

Porcelain is hard-wearing, low maintenance and available in many finishes, including ones that resemble stone. Natural stone has real character but varies from piece to piece and may need sealing. Porcelain slabs are also thinner and lighter than many stones, which can help on awkward access.

Sandstone has a warm, textured look and generally good grip. Travertine stays relatively cool in sun and is a popular choice around pools, though it needs care in selection and upkeep. Whatever you choose, the quality of the laying and the jointing makes as much difference as the material.

We also repoint and repair existing paving where it makes more sense than replacing it. Our work is guaranteed, and images on this site are for illustration only.

Questions

Expert Paving Contractors Finestrat — Common Questions

What is the best paving for a pool surround?

A non-slip finish that stays comfortable in the sun. Porcelain, travertine and sandstone are all used, and we help you choose.

Can you repair existing paving?

Yes. Repointing and repairs are often better value than replacement, and we tell you honestly which suits yours.

Do you lay paving on slopes?

Yes. Steps, landings and falls need extra planning, which we cover at the visit.

Will paving get too hot?

Dark surfaces can. Lighter tones stay cooler, and we discuss this when you choose a material.
